Comment Scoring & Karma
In order to foster constructive and friendly discourse, a karma system is in place on Sankaku Complex’s comments.
Scoring
- All comments are given a score determined by upvotes and downvotes, in addition to the commenter’s karma score.
- The default score is 5 for logged in users, and 0 for anonymous users.
Karma
- Users whose comments receive votes accumulate a karma score. This determines the default score the user’s comments start with, and the frequency with which the user can vote.
- A user’s karma cannot be negative, and at low levels of karma the user can still comment and vote, although their comments may no longer be visible by default.
- Anonymous activity does not accumulate karma.
Visibility
- The threshold for comment visibility is a score of 5, below which the comment is collapsed and must be expanded to be visible.
- Comments by logged in users start at a score of 5, and are shown by default.
- Anonymous comments start at a score of 0, and are hidden by default.
Voting
- All logged in users may vote. The number of times each day a user can vote is determined by karma and account age.
- A new user with no karma can vote once per day. As the account ages, this increases to a maximum of 10 times a day.
- Users with high karma may vote as many times a day as their karma score allows, with allowable votes based a logarithmic scaling of the score.
Rules and flagging
- Any comment not abiding the commenting rules will be removed by moderators. Repeated violations will be met with a ban on further commenting or restriction of the account itself. This moderation process is independent of the karma or voting systems.
- Attempts to game, rig, or otherwise abuse the commenting system will also be treated as violations of the commenting rules.
